The best dives sites in the world all offer something slightly different but while their specific features may differ, they have a lot in common including the fact that they are usually home to an array of marine creatures, the water should be clear and there is often a beautiful coral reef to explore. What one considers to be the best diving in the world will vary from diver to diver, as some avid divers will enjoy seeing Manta Rays and others will prefer to dive with dolphins, and some will like wreck diving and others will have fun exploring caves or reefs.
However, even though the pull of specific dive sites will attract different people wanting to enjoy seeing varied underwater sights, there’s no doubt that diving in the Similan Islands rates among the top dive sites in the world.
So, what makes a dive site one of the world’s best?
Diving in warm climes is nearly always far more enjoyable than diving in cold water. Not only is the water more appealing to jump into but the marine life on offer is often more exciting to see with colorful butterfly fish, shy seahorses and gentle Manta Rays all on show. Diving in the Similans where the water is an average 28° is pleasurable and the temperature of the air in the archipelago can be stifling, making diving headfirst into the water extremely tempting, if only to cool off!
Another important factor when finding a great dive spot is what the water looks like and an unforgettable dive sport should feature the following:
- Clear water
- Warm water
- Reasonably flat water
- Good visibility
The choppier the sea, the less visibility you will have when below the surface, so it is usually best to dive in flat, warm water.
The Marine Life
When searching for a site that offers the best diving in the world, it will need to be home to an abundance of marine life. Divers want to get up close and personal with the underwater world and this means touching wet noses with everything from the unusual to the beautiful, the colorful to the grey and the humungous to the tiny.
Here are some of the creatures you can expect to wave a fin at during a dive trip in the Similans:
- Manta Rays
- Whale Sharks
- Sea Horses
- Harlequin Shrimp
When on board a dive boat claiming to offer some of the best diving in the world, it is also fun to see an abundance of wildlife above the surface such as sea eagles, king fishers and the rare Nicobar pigeon all of which can of course be seen in the Similans.
Another primary draw for keen divers is the coral. While some divers enjoy exploring swimthroughs or discovering underwater caves, the majority of divers feel most at home when admiring colorful reefs through their facemask. Fans, hard and soft, table, staghorns, tree, leafy and brain corals can all be seen in the Similan Islands and the thriving coral reefs go a long way to help cement the Similans claim for offering some of the best diving in the world – and rightly so.
